Most of the songs are fairly self-explanatory on this list. I tried to limit the amount of punk rock I included, but that’s a huge fraction of my iTunes library, so it was no easy feat to only include, what?, three. And if you have punk rock, you gotta have reggae, right? Redemption Song is one of the most simple and piercing “songs of freedom.” What better way to “damn the man” than to do it with a simple riff and quiet voice?
And this time of year, some good, old fashioned Irish punk rock is clanging around in my head anyway, so I had to include Stiff Little Fingers’ “Alternative Ulster.”
Hmmm... skip on down to the Black Lips – Atlanta’s bad boys of rock n’ roll. Their shows are the live equivalent of a Robert Mapplethorpe photo. Not for the faint of heart.
And what’s a “Stick It to the Man” mix without a little Elvis gyration, huh?
Crap! I had “The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash” on there originally – where’d it go? Dang. I wouldn’t have put Jay-Z on there without a nod to the granddaddy of rap. Oh well.
As it is, Jay-Z’s “Lucifer” damns, well, somebody that’s been damned for years. Word.
And to end, I included Nina Simone’s “I Shall Be Released”— a cover of a song written by Mr. Dylan that almost feels like a negro spiritual to me.
Great guest list! Man, I didn't even think about putting Elvis on there, though it really seems quite natural. And the Beastie Boys--good call.
